Alif-Aleph UK Launches Interactive Web Forums

On 29th March 2007, Alif-Aleph UK, a grass-roots organisation promoting positive contacts between Muslims and Jews, launched the first interactive web forum for cross-community dialogue.  The website, funded by the Home Office, provides the tools for a new and dynamic discourse to take place between Muslims and Jews of all ages throughout the UK and beyond.

Alif-Aleph UK members were treated to a night of music from a variety of Jewish and Muslim traditions to celebrate the launch.  Muslim and Jewish co-chairs of the AAUK Richard Varley and Oliver Lovat, said of the initiative:

"Alif-Aleph UK aims to create a safe space for Muslims and Jews to interact with each other.  With this website we are planning to reach the parts of both of our communities that haven't yet been reached.  For the first time, participants will have the chance to talk to members of other communities at any time from anywhere in the world."

To post on the forums, users simply need to visit http://www.aauk.org/ and register some basic details.  From there they can join already existing discussions or start new feeds on any subject they want.

Ground-breaking Muslim-Jewish Women’s Conference “is only the first step”

In an initiative convened by a steering group of Imams, Rabbis and female communal leaders, over one hundred Muslim and Jewish women of all denominations were brought together to discuss issues ranging from divorce in Islam and Judaism to the creation of mankind.

Organised by Alif-Aleph UK and the Joseph Interfaith Foundation, with the support of Communities and Local Government, the conference was the third in a series with a vision of creating trust and understanding between the Muslim and Jewish communities.  A pilot conference of Imams and Rabbis in London last year was built upon with a second conference of Imams and Rabbis in Manchester on 26th March 2007.

John Battle MP, the Prime Minister's Envoy to Faith Communities and Rt Hon. Hazel Blears MP, Labour Party Chair, addressed the Manchester conference. They both expressed the important role that faith plays in shaping our relations with each other as citizens of this country.

The buzz of debate and friendships being formed at the Women's Conference made clear the role women of faith have to play in good community relations.  The Rt. Hon. Meg Munn MP, Deputy Minister for Women and Equalities addressed the conference saying:

"Many of you will be acting in your own local area, making your own contribution toward social and community cohesion. It is important that faith communities fully use the knowledge and experience of women to effect change."

Such sentiment was echoed when the participants demanded of the organisers that the valuable strides taken on 28th March be taken forward, so Muslim and Jewish women can work together towards a more cohesive society.
